Cats are climbers by nature; height allows them to both avoid or escape larger predators, and give them a better and bigger view of the happenings in their area. Climbing is also good exercise and helps keep their claws in good shape. Cat claws grow continuously, both in length and layers from the center out. It is not unusual to find what looks like a toenail near an area that a cat scratches. It is the shed outer layer of the claw and part of the reason cats are so industrious about scratching.
A veterinarian can inject a microchip directly into your cat or kitten. The chip does not harm him, and it can be inserted at about eight weeks of age. It is a permanent form of identification, and it cannot become lost or removed by the cat because it is placed under the muscle near the shoulder. If your pet gets lost and is turned into an animal rescue organization or shelter, the workers will scan him and use the special code on the chip to contact you. Whether you opt for micro chipping or the more traditional metal ID tags, remember to update your contact information if you move. Keep an eye on the condition of the scratching post. If it becomes worn out or frayed, replace it with a new one.
Exercise and Play - Accessories like dangling mice, spring balls and hanging ropes provide hours of entertainment. Some tress with multiple levels, ladders and ramps are aptly labeled "kitty gyms." These are great for homes with multiple cats that love chasing each other and playing hide and seek. Where to Find Them - Basic models of cat tree houses can be purchased at pet stores, but if you want to give your feline a little more to explore, you can find many models available from online stores that specialize in cat furniture. Ranging in price from $40 to $400 you're sure to find a model that's right for you, your cat and your space.
Either option works well. And allows you the flexibility to replace the carpet when it wears out or you want to change the look. Peel the backing off the double sided tape and affix your carpet square to the base. Try to align the edge of the carpet square flush with the edge of your plywood base. DIY scratch carpet - Working from the bottom of the base, drive the two wood screws through the pilot holes so they just poke through the carpet on the other side.
